The Bloody
AQUAVIT AND PICKLED HERRING
The Bloody
Viking
Aquavit stands in for vodka, and a rolled herring fillet stands in for the celery stalk.
The Bloody Viking swaps vodka for aquavit, the caraway-and-dill spirit of Scandinavia, and garnishes with a rolled pickled herring fillet instead of a celery stalk. It's a Bloody Mary built for a smörgåsbord, not a diner brunch.
Ingredients
- Aquavit2 oz
- Tomato juice4 oz
- Lemon juice0.5 oz
- Worcestershire sauce2 dashes
- Hot sauce2 dashes
- Celery salt, for the rim1 tbsp
- Ice1 fill
- Rolled pickled herring fillet (garnish)1
- Cornichon (garnish)1
- Fresh dill sprig (garnish)1
Instructions
- 1Wet the rim of a tall glass and coat it with celery salt.
- 2Fill the glass with ice.
- 3Add the aquavit, tomato juice, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, and hot sauce.
- 4Stir gently to combine.
- 5Garnish with a rolled pickled herring fillet and a cornichon on a pick, a fresh dill sprig, and a lemon wheel.
Note Look for a lightly spiced aquavit rather than a heavily caraway-forward one — it lets the tomato base come through instead of fighting it.
