OLD BAY AND CRAB CLAW

The Maryland
Mary

A thick Old Bay crust and a steamed crab claw make this a crab-boil drink, not a brunch one.

The Maryland Mary takes its cue from a crab boil: a thick crust of Old Bay on the rim, more Old Bay stirred into the drink itself, and a steamed crab claw hooked over the glass as garnish. It's built to sit next to a pile of steamed crabs on butcher paper, not a brunch table.

Ingredients
  • Vodka1.5 oz
  • Tomato juice4 oz
  • Lemon juice0.5 oz
  • Old Bay seasoning0.5 tsp
  • Hot sauce2 dashes
  • Old Bay seasoning, for the rim1 tbsp
  • Ice1 fill
  • Steamed crab claw (garnish)1
  • Lemon wheel (garnish)1
  • Celery stalk (garnish)1
  • Pickled okra (garnish)1
Instructions
  1. 1Wet the rim of a tall glass and coat it generously with Old Bay seasoning.
  2. 2Fill the glass with ice.
  3. 3Add the vodka, tomato juice, lemon juice, Old Bay seasoning, and hot sauce.
  4. 4Stir gently to combine.
  5. 5Garnish with a steamed crab claw, a lemon wheel, a celery stalk, and pickled okra.
Note Don't skimp on the rim — a thin dusting of Old Bay disappears into the drink, but a real crust holds up sip after sip.
